Itinerary for Rwanda Wildlife and Gorilla Safari

Day 1: Arrival for the 6 days Rwanda Safari

Today you begin the amazing experience of the Rwanda wildlife and gorilla safari. Kagera Safaris' driver guide will pick you up from your hotel or the Kigali international airport on your arrival. Depending on your arrival time, you will have a short Kigali city tour, visiting key areas like the Genocide Memorial, craft centers, Kandt National Museum, etc.

Day 2: Transfer to Akagera National park + Boat Safari

Leave for Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda, after a relaxed breakfast. The trip takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, with stops at Akagera Park for photos of the beautiful landscape washrooms along the way. Later, arrive at the park and check into your lodge. Have lunch and later leave for a one-hour boat safari on Lake Ihema. Drive time: 2 hours, 30 minutes; or helicopter (Augusta): 30 minutes

Day 3: Full-day game drive at Akagera National Park

We arise early and leave right after breakfast to explore Akagera national park in search of the big mammals like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, several antelope species, and recently, reintroduced lions. Most of the game drives happen in the northern part of the park, where we will spend the better part of the day and return to the lodge later that afternoon. Akagera national park is the biggest in Rwanda, with beautiful scenery and landscape. It has varied habitats for wildlife and is a birders' haven with over 500 species in the park.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, we begin our journey to Volcanoes National Park, home to the massive gentle giants. It is a natural habitat for mountain gorillas, providing the perfect environment and food for the gorillas. Volcanoes National Park is located in northern Rwanda, about 2 hours and 30 minutes from Kigali, in Kinigi, Musanze. The drive from Akagera national park to Musanze will be through Kigali city, passing several villages with great landscape views. You can request that the driver stops for photo opportunities at various viewpoints as you see the endless hills and understand why Rwanda is known as "the land of a thousand hills." We will arrive at the lodge later that evening, ready for the gorilla hike the next day. Time spent driving: 6 hours

Day 5: Gorilla trekking safari

After a restful night's sleep, you'll spend today interacting with mountain gorillas in the lush and tangled jungles of the Virunga mountains, the national park of the volcanoes. After an early breakfast, your driver guide will take you to the briefing location so you can learn from the ranger guide about how to behave while in the park and be divided into the several gorilla groups. Enjoy the traditional Rwandan dances and freshly brewed Rwandan coffee in the interim as you wait for the briefing. Start your trip to the gorillas in their natural environment after receiving a briefing from the tourist centre. You must be reasonably fit to enjoy this event; the trip can last anywhere from an hour to several hours, depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night.

Day 6: End of your 6 day Rwanda Wildlife and Gorilla Safari

We sincerely hope that your time spent discovering Rwanda's wildlife was fantastic and that you will smile when you think back on these experiences. After a leisurely morning on your final day of the safari, we depart for Kigali, where you will catch your flight home or check into your accommodation. You can add an optional activity, such as trekking with golden monkeys, ascending one of the Virungas, or going to Dian Fossey's grave to learn more about her conservation efforts, if your flight is later in the evening.
